HIPAA Meets The Media

10/9/18: Three Boston hospitals agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle allegations of HIPAA violations. That in it wouldn’t be news – but the violations occurred because the hospitals allowed TV crews to film patients for a television production. An article by Steven Porter posted on Health Leaders explains the HIPAA violations and provides links for deeper explanations and guidance from HHS about the disclosure of patient information. Given that everyone has a cell phone with a camera, it’s probably worthwhile to consider how a quick, unauthorized snapshot of a famous patient could create a HIPAA problem.
